Giveaway: Five $50 Safeway Gift Cards

by Dana @ Mrs. Moneysaver on September 15, 2009

safewayLogoLast week I shared some exciting Safeway news for those in the DC and Baltimore metro areas.  These 140 Safeway stores have introduced new everyday low prices on thousands of items.  This program is also underway at Safeway family stores in areas of California, Nevada, Illinois, and Florida. Throughout the stores, you’ll find thousands of yellow tags showing you the old price (crossed out) and the new everyday low price.  If the item is also on Club Card sale, that price will be shown as well.  And for those in the DC and Baltimore areas, two of your local radio stations are giving several Safeway shoppers the chance to win $1,000 gift cards.  Those contests run through the 18th, so be sure to find out now how to win.

Last week Safeway provided me with a $250 gift card, so I could try shopping their new everyday low prices.   I did a little dance when the FedEx man arrived with the card on my porch.  Grocery shopping in a store touting new low prices?  Count me in!

Since my nearest Safeway required a bit of a drive, I decided to spend my whole gift card in one shopping trip.  After carts full and hours in the store, here’s what I was able to buy:

Safeway Shopping Trip

As you can tell, I was able to stock up on some high-dollar items such as diapers, wipes, insulated sippy cups, wine, and coffee.  And my stockpile on items like canned beans, cereals, soups, and pasta is now overflowing.

In celebration of the new everyday low prices program, I’m thrilled to announce that I am offering my biggest Frugal in Virginia giveaway yet- five winners will each receive a $50 Safeway gift card. Yep, that’s right.  Five winners.  $50 each.

While the new everyday low prices are location-specific, Safeway family stores are nationwide, so this giveaway is open to everyone, not just those in the “new everyday low prices” areas. I do ask, however, that you only enter if you live close enough to one of these stores to actually use the gift card.  (Safeway stores include Pak n Save, Von’s, Pavillions, Genuardi’s, Dominick’s, Carrs, Randall’s, and Tom Thumb.)

There are two ways to win.

1.  Photo Contest- One $50 gift card will be rewarded to the winner of this contest.
Take a picture in front of your local Safeway showing me how excited you are about the bargains available at the store.  Get creative!  Extra points for funny.  Email it to me before September 24th at 11:00 PM.  (Email:  mrsadams84 at yahoo dot com).  Please put “Safeway Picture Contest” in the subject line.  The top two pictures, chosen by me, will be posted to this site soon after and readers will then vote for their favorite picture.  The picture with the most votes wins.  By submitting your picture, you are agreeing that I can post it publicly on my site if you are in the top two.  All other pictures will be discarded after the contest.

2.  Comments-  Four winners from the comments below will be chosen at random to each win a $50 Safeway gift card.  You have four chances to win. You can enter in each of the four ways, or just pick which entries you would like to submit. Make sure you leave a separate comment for each entry. If you are reading this post from an email, you must click over to the actual post to leave your comments.

A.  Leave a comment letting me know what you would buy with the gift card or why you could especially use it right now.

B. Subscribe to this blog, and leave me a comment letting me know you’ve done so. Click here to subscribe by email or feed reader or see the right sidebar to sign up. You must remain a subscriber for the duration of this giveaway. If you’re already a subscriber, leave a comment letting me know. Thank you, subscribers! You make these giveaways possible.

C. Follow me on Twitter. (@frugalinva) and tweet about this giveaway using the tweet below. You must do both!  Then leave a comment below with the tweet.  (Click on the time stamp below the giveaway tweet to see a status update page.  Leave the link to that page.)

Enter to win one of five $50 Safeway gift cards from @frugalinva : http://tinyurl.com/safeway3 #northernvirginia #dc #baltimore

D. Blog about this giveaway on your own blog, then leave a comment with the direct URL to the blog post.

Remember, leave a separate comment for each entry. And please enter only in the ways listed above. I reserve the right to delete comments not adhering to the above entry guidelines.

If your email address is not clearly visible in your linked profile, make sure you leave your email within your comment.  If I cannot find your contact information either in your comment or profile, you will be ineligible to win.

The photo contest pictures must be submitted by September 24th.  Entry comments will be closed on September 27th at 8:00 PM EDT.  I will contact the winners by email shortly after the giveaway ends, and the winners will have 48 hours to respond. If a winner does not respond within that time frame, a new winner will be announced.

Thanks for entering!

Ah, how great! I live right outside DC, and I always preferred Safeway but made myself shop at Giant to keep costs down, so this is SO exciting!

My fiance and I are getting married at the end of the month, and we’ve been the ones paying for our own wedding. This means we’ve had to cut back MAJORLY in all areas of our lives, including groceries. Right now we spend about $50/week, which covers all three meals for both of us for the entire week. This gift card could buy us groceries for a week, which would mean that much more money for the wedding! That would be amazing! Thanks so much!

I’d love to use the $50 gift card to stock up on healthy snacks for my kids school lunches! I have a pretty good stock of sugary snacks and chips from because coupons for those things are so readily available. Having $50 free to spend on fruits & veggies would be fabulous!!!

I love Safeway!
Right now I’d get Healthy Choice entrees (they are on sale for $2.99 ea, but if you purchase 5 it’s $1.99 ea, and there are $2 coupons at healthychoice.com), also some Yoplait yogurt that’s on sale for $.50/cup if you buy 10 – there are coupons out for these and Safeway donates a pink lid to Susan G. Komen foundation to find cure for cancer for every 10 cups you purchase… There are lots of great deals to be had, and with printable coupons, shortcuts and cellfire, $50 giftcard would really go a long way at Safeway.
Thank you so much for a chance to win!

I live in Norfolk, but my grandmother (and my aunt, who is her caretaker) live in Kensington, MD. I would give it to them to use – they have really been struggling lately to buy groceries and not eating very well. My grandfather is in a very expensive nursing home. Last year for her birthday, my brother and I bought her a $50 Safeway gift card and it made her so happy. I would love to do that again for her!!!

I would buy more meat for my freezer. My husband is getting worried about swine flu and wants us to be prepared to pull my elementary kids out of school if necessary and live in our house, without going anywhere (!!) for 3 or 4 weeks if necessary. Stockpile will get us through, but it will be pretty meatless and wild recipes at the end. I really hope he is over reacting to the all the media reports.

And final entry for the Safeway gift card: why I could use this gift card.

Next Friday is my last day at my office job. I am leaving to pursue my dream of an acting career full time. I am excited, but also terrified — about health insurance, about making ends meet, about falling on my face. As such, I know I’m going to have to become a lot more aware of coupons and special deals. A giftcard to safeway will help me because it will give me another month where I won’t have to worry about whether I can afford to eat. Thanks.

I would use the gift card for some “meat”…the Safeway meat is usually the best in the area — and I often go just for the meat! Was in about 2 weeks ago they had ground beef for .99 a lb… you cannot beat that! I bought about 12 lbs ~ made lasagne, meatballs, meatloaf, taco’s, etc. and froze –thing was the meat was FRESH and you could tell.

I could really use this because we are moving to Montana in the next couple months, and will need to re-stock our pantry since we’re trying to use up as much of it as we can now, so we don’t have to move it all there!

Reply

I would love to win, since moving to a new area Safeway is our only grocery store.

Reply

128 Donna September 18, 2009 at 7:41 am

I’d use it to offset our grocery bill, my husband is a financial consultant and works just off of commission… needless to say his paychecks have taken a nose dive due to this economy, this will really help us put the $ somewhere else we have been needing it. The nearest Safeway is a little far, but not too bad if you plan it around a trip to DC.

As for WHY I want to win. I am a teacher and we switched from an early start to a regular start date this year, and in the process, I am lucky enough not to receive a paycheck in August since we switched our starting date from Aug to Sept. So I’ve been living off savings and every little bit helps to build it back up. I’d use the $50 GC and put $50 back into savings for future emergencies.

Entry no. 2: Comment

A gift card would be a mitzvah without compare. My family is and has been mired in poverty. It’s affecting our physical and emotional health, the marriage itself, our son’s self-esteem… it’s a seemingly never-ending nightmare that won’t end or even ease temporarily without a miracle. Despite the spouse’s (low-paying) job and my sporadic freelance checks, we do without food more than I care to admit. Today, we lost our health insurance. The only way we can get food is via Safeway delivery, as we have no car and are not near public transport (largely trapped in the house 24/7/365) — and as you can guess, affording Safeway is darn near impossible for us. Wow, would this gift card help our efforts to feed a very hungry and needy 13-yr-old. Thank you for offering it and please… pick us!

I would use it to buy groceries- money is always tight because I quit my job to be a stay at home mom, but it is ESP tight during the holidays! Could definitely use this!
