1. Seasonal Consignment Sales

In our area, every spring and fall means it’s time to hit the consignment sales. For about 6 weeks straight, twice a year, mothers can hit these sales to find the best deals on clothing, baby gear, maternity wear, toys and more. Never been to a consignment sale? Here are some tips to get you started.

Bonus of the consignment sale? If you decide to participate in the sale, you can shop early, as well as clean out your closets and make some cash to go toward your children’s clothing budget!

2. Get thee to a Goodwill

Have a spare moment? Check out your local thrift stores for deals on children’s clothes and gear. You may find things out of season, or 2 sizes too big, but it’s worth spending $5 on a London Fog coat and storing it for a few years. I like to pick up jeans for the children here when I can. My greatest score at the Goodwill? A Little Tikes cube climber for $10, as well as a basketball goal for $7.50. Tip: if you see something you like, buy it right then. It won’t be there when you come back!

3. Pass it Around

For my boys, I’m very lucky to have some older cousins who pass down clothes to us. If things are too big, I just store them away until it’s time. You’ll save money and be green, all at the same time! If you have things your children have outgrown, ask around at your church or work for people in need to whom you can pass your things . It feels good to help others out, too!

4. Buy a Little Bigger

I tend to buy dresses, leggings, tights, turtlenecks, pajamas and T shirts about a size larger than needed, in order to get another season of wear. Long sleeves and leggings can be rolled up, and your child will be able to wear the item for 2 years. About half the dresses my daughter is wearing this year were from last summer. The other half, she’ll be able to wear next year as well.

5. Ever Thought About Ebay?

I’m a sucker for boutique shoes for my children, like See Kai Run, Umi, and Naturino. The quality and comfort can’t be beat. Instead of paying $45 for a pair of shoes, I scour Ebay until I find what I need. I’ve picked up many Gymboree pieces here as well. Watch your shipping costs, keep an eye on the bottom line, and you’ll pick up some deals.

6. For Everything, There is a Season

My husband thinks I’m crazy for this, but I buy a lot of things for the children at the end of the season, for wearing next year. It takes a little practice, but it makes more sense to buy a shorts for 2.99 and pack them away, than to pay full price next year. Children’s Place is my favorite place to shop ahead during their Monster Sale. Don’t forget to check out Retail Me Not, for coupon codes before you push the ‘purchase’ button.

I’d love to hear more tips from you, so don’t forget to leave a comment!

Dianna is the 2010 version of the Well-Brought-Up-Southern-Girl. She knows she shouldn’t give the children Twinkies for breakfast, drink hard liquor before 5 p.m., or scream obscenities at the top of her lungs, unless there are extenuating circumstances. You can read more about her life with a teenage Sybil, a pre-school Pampered Princess, and the Twin Toddler Tornadoes at The Kennedy Adventures!

Kroger Family Stores, General Mills, and other sponsors are teaming up this month for the Biggest Loser Pound For Pound Challenge. The sponsors are all set to donate up to $1,080,000 to Feeding America, who will then in turn deliver that contribution in food to local food banks across the country.

But these sponsors aren’t just going to fork over the money on their own; they want us to get involved- and get healthier in the process.

So here’s how you can help- For every pound you pledge to lose through the Pound For Pound Challenge through June 30th, the sponsors will donate 14 cents to Feeding America- enough to deliver one pound of groceries to a food bank in your area. I need to drop a few pounds, so I signed up for the Challenge today. It took just one minute, and in the process, 10 pounds of food will be donated to my local food bank through Feeding America. It’s a win-win.

Sign up for the Pound For Pound Challenge by June 30th to help those who are less fortunate in your community, as well as help yourself get a little healthier!

I’m on vacation this week, but in addition to still sharing deals with you between trips to the ocean, I also have a bunch of great guest posts lined up for you from some fabulous ladies!

The following guest post comes to you from Sami at SamiCone.com. Enjoy!

Being budget conscious is not just for the poor anymore. Between a crashing economy and the heightened number of natural disasters, I think it’s safe to say that each of us could benefit from being more money savvy.

Just before our kids were born, my husband and I made a conscious decision that we would rather spend money making memories with our family rather than buying stuff that is quickly forgotten. But this hasn’t always been easy on a limited budget.

So what’s a girl to do? I had to come up with some practical ways to shave our budget. It just so happens that anyone, anywhere can put these principles into practice.

Regardless of whether you’re looking to pay off debt or just live more generously, there are a few, simple tips each of us can take to live both a fun & frugal lifestyle. Just follow my SCORE method: 5 simple tips to either get you started on the road to savings or just give you a quick tune-up in your journey.

1. Start Somewhere
Too many people don’t save money because they don’t know where to start! Focus your efforts one grocery or drug store, start pulling coupons for all your non-food items or just cut back on eating out. If nothing else, start keeping track of your spending so you know where your money is going each month.

2. Clip Coupons & Sign up for Store Reward Cards
Start gathering Sunday coupon inserts or asking friends & neighbors for theirs from their paper! The standard Sunday coupon inserts (Smartsource.com & Redplum.com), as well as many others (Coupons.com, Cellfire.com, Upromise.com) not only offer online coupons so you don’t have to buy the Sunday paper, but will also load them directly onto your store rewards cards!

Many stores today allow you to use competitor coupons, or at the very least, offer price-matching. Sign up online for emails from grocery stores across the country and even though they may not be in your area, most local chains will still accept their coupons. Also, many grocery, drug, & retail stores, as well as restaurants, offer reward cards. They cost nothing to receive, but can save you hundreds of dollars a year in special offers & freebies.

3. Organize
You can’t use a coupon or a rebate if you don’t know where it is. Make your system work for you: either clip and keep them on you or keep Sunday coupon inserts whole in a file folder at home. It also helps to have a central calendar so you know when offers expire or when free events are taking place. They say you can tell where a person spends their time and money by looking at their checkbook and their calendar. Do you like what yours say about you? (If you want, you can direct them to the Google calendar on my site where I list free events across the country).

4. Reduce portions
Not only will your health improve, but so will your budget. Start reducing the amount you eat, but also the amount you cook with. For example: use ¾ lb ground beef when the recipe calls for 1 lb or use halve the amount of sugar in a recipe. Another great way to stretch your meat dollar is to add beans instead.

Use the same principle with paper products; make an effort to use less paper towel, napkins, etc. and instead switch to reusable cloths.

5. Execute
Now it’s time to put all these principles into practice! Plan eating out around coupons you have or “free night” offers. Communicate your savings plan to your family so they can join in (especially helpful if you’re all working together towards a goal – like a family vacation!) Stockpile when your family’s favorite items go on sale: the big jackpot when it comes to couponing is to wait for a sale, match-up store coupons with manufacturer coupons and then stock up! Don’t just buy 1 or 2 of the item, but enough to get you through the next 2-3 months until the item will most likely be on sale again.

With a passion for teaching and mentoring others as her inspiration, Sami Cone began blogging in 2009 to encourage others to live their dream life and pursue their passions.
